Ana Romañach Álvarez
Graduate student: Hispanic Linguistics
Ana Romanach Alvarez

Biography:

I am currently in my second year of the Hispanic Linguistic graduate program at Penn State University. I hold a previous Master's in Linguistics from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras, and a Bachelor's in English with a concentration in Linguistics from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez. My research focuses on how bilingual speakers use and process language in both uni- and bilingual contexts in their daily lives, including codeswitching.

I will return this summer to the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras to work with Dr Rosa Guzzardo Tamargo. Once there, I will collect data on the preferences of Spanish-English Puerto Rican bilinguals when producing voluntary language switching along with information of their social networks. This data will be compared from the Puerto Rican community at Penn State, therefore providing a view of how different individuals and communities of Puerto Rican bilinguals use their two languages when allowed to switch languages voluntarily.
