My name is Jacqueline Katzev I am a rising junior here at University Park. Currently, I am studying Communication Sciences and Disorders while minoring in Spanish. I plan to pursue a masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology post graduation from Penn State - focusing on swallowing disorders. Since Fall 2014, I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with Dr. Marianna Nadeu in studying contrastive focus in English-Spanish bilinguals.
I will be traveling to Tarragona, Spain this summer to conduct research at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili. The research that I plan to conduct seeks to gain insight into what strategies bilinguals use to mark contrastive focus and, more specifically, how they use these strategies. I will be looking into the syntactic and prosodic strategies that both languages use to mark contrastive focus. I plan to study bilinguals by performing a detailed acoustic analysis. In this analysis, I will measure duration, f0 range, and f0 peak alignment of the focused constituent by using the voice analyzing software 'Praat.'
When I'm not researching, I tutor ESL students at the Mid-State Literacy Council here in State College. I am also a member of the National Student Speech-Hearing and Language Association chapter here at Penn State. I am so incredibly honored and grateful to have this once in a lifetime opportunity to conduct international research. Thank you so much to the PIRE community!
