Biography:

Hello, my name is Jin (Dongjoo) Yu. As an international student hailing from South Korea, I am currently engaged in the Integrated Undergraduate-Graduate (IUG) program, focusing on Psychology and Human Resources and Employment Relations (HRER). My academic and professional interests lie at the intersection of HR and Industrial/Organizational Psychology, with a particular emphasis on the intricacies of the hiring process and talent development strategies.
My PIRE project is about Accented speech on the hiring decision. This summer, I will be conducting research in Puerto Rico in Dr. Guzzardo's lab. The study investigates the effect of Spanish accents on hiring decisions in the workplace, examining whether accented English speech influences perceptions of a job candidate's competence and trustworthiness. It specifically explores the impact of Puerto Rican and Mexican Spanish accents on the evaluation. Utilizing recordings of female speakers with various Spanish accents, the research employs a standardized assessment on an online platform to measure participants' reactions. The ultimate goal is to inform fairer hiring practices by providing empirical data on linguistic bias in employment settings.
